In a stunning chain of events at Parliament today the South Australian Liberals voted unanimously to strip working South Australians of their Christmas Eve public holiday penalty rates.
Quotes attributable to SA Unions Secretary Dale Beasley:
“Thanks to Stephen Marshall and the South Australian Liberals, working South Australians could be going into the Christmas season with money being ripped out of their pockets.
“It has been the case for the last decade that the evening of Christmas Eve is treated as a public holiday and people who work at that time have been entitled to public holiday penalty rates. During Parliamentary proceedings today the South Australian Liberals have voted to strip that entitlement away."
“Stephen Marshall and the South Australian Liberals have stolen the Christmas Eve penalty rates of thousands of South Australian workers. At a time when we have the lowest ever wage share of GDP, the lowest wages growth since records began and when the economic recovery from COVID-19 is almost entirely dependent on people spending money, working South Aussies need their penalty rates."
“This move from Steven Marshall and the Liberals is an outrageous attack. It’s a slap in the face of workers who have carried us through the pandemic; our health heroes, ambos, nurses, our hospitality and retail workers, emergency services and police. They stand to earn less at Christmas because of Steven Marshall. The government should be ashamed of themselves.”
