    CLIMATE CHANGE
SA - AT THE EDGE OF A DESERT, AT THE END OF A RIVER

    24 September 2009

SA Unions is launching an ambitious campaign to challenge workers to make their workplaces environmentally friendly.

The Union Climate Connectors initiative aims to inspire workers to tackle climate change in their daily work environ, while also keeping pressure on political parties to keep climate change high on the state's agenda.

The initiative is just one practical benefit to emerge from the state's inaugural, union-driven climate conference "At the edge of a desert, at the end of a river".

SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says the state is vulnerable to climate change and it's time ordinary workers acted.

"It's imperative that we get a grip on climate change because our state is in a more precarious position than most.  If we don't accept and adapt to the fact that SA is getting hotter and drier, then our jobs, our economy, our community and our children will be at risk."

"The reality is that climate change is not simply the province of traditional green groups.  Nor is it a problem solely for politicians to tackle.  We believe that widespread action is required at the grassroots to produce the groundswell needed for genuine change.  Our expertise in the area of work and economy means unions are perfectly positioned to drive practical action."

"This inaugural Climate Change Conference has brought together a raft of national and local experts to be the catalyst for that action.  More than 100 rank and file members from almost every union in the state will hear first hand what the challenges are, how others are responding, and what we can do here."

"Our membership is diverse and we think everyone has a role to play - from construction workers and those in the forestry sector, through to public servants, nurses and teachers."

"The Union Climate Connectors initiative challenges workers to do better in their workplaces, and through their individual actions, collectively contribute to sustainability."

The Climate Conference was held on Thursday 24 September at the eco-smart Ridley Pavilion, Wayville.
