LAUNCH OF
NEW WORKERS' COMPENSATION SERVICE
13 December 2006
A new service for workers with
compensation disputes is being launched by SA Unions this morning
(11 am, first floor, 46 Greenhill Road, Wayville).
From modest beginnings, SA Unions
aims to independently represent up to 400 clients a year in the
Workers Compensation Tribunal.
"We are starting off with two staff
and a handful of clients, but expect this will grow rapidly as
injured workers realise they can obtain free, independent advice if
their workers' compensation claim turns into a dispute", SA Unions
Secretary Janet Giles says.
"We think workers will welcome their
case being managed independently by SA Unions - a result of the
takeover the Workers' Compensation Service previously operated by
WorkCover."
Ms Giles says the free and
confidential service is backed by more than 100 years of union
expertise and experience.
"SA Unions is arguably the best
placed organisation in South Australia to offer this service.
We are best qualified to advocate on behalf of workers as
representing workers is something we have done for more than a
century, we know the legislation inside out and have a strong pool
of expertise to draw on," Ms Giles says.
"The new Service will be a real asset
to SA Unions, as it will enable us to constantly strengthen our
knowledge of the workers' compensation system, and find ways to
improve the treatment of injured workers and assist their healthy
and safe return to work."
"We look at this as an exciting
addition to the many great services offered to workers and their
families by SA Unions", Ms Giles says.
The SA Unions Workers Compensation
Service was launched by WorkCover Chief Executive Officer, Julia
Davison.
