RUDD-GILLARD LISTEN TO WORKERS
15 December
2006
SA Unions Secretary Janet Giles says
tackling Howard's unfair IR laws is a sure-fire vote winner for new
ALP Leader Kevin Rudd and his deputy Julia Gillard.
Ms Giles says Mr Rudd and Ms Gillard
will hear first hand how the laws are affecting workers when they
visit a prominent Adelaide construction site this morning (Hotel
Adelaide redevelopment, Brougham Place, North Adelaide at 7 am).
Ms Giles says she is delighted that
Industrial Relations will be tackled by Julia Gillard.
"We are very pleased and excited that
Julia Gillard has this portfolio. Industrial Relations will
have the added profile and clout of being the deputy leader's
responsibility, indicating that the ALP is taking this issue
extremely seriously."
"It is an added bonus that Ms Gillard
is from South Australia, as that gives her an insight into the
unique challenges facing our state. We hope she makes regular
visits to remain in touch with the reality facing workers and their
families as these unfair laws begin to bite."
"South Australia will be crucial to
the ALP's fortunes at the next federal election."
"The three crucial marginal seats of
Wakefield, Makin and Kingston could hold the key to office. If
the ALP can win those seats, it has a strong chance of winning
government."
"Our research shows that Industrial
Relations is a critical issue to voters in those seats. People
are struggling to maintain mortgages, pay bills and provide for
their kids. They don't like the uncertainty of dismissal
without warning, of individual contracts which reduce their
earnings, and of the stripping of their work rights."
"We look forward to Ms Gillard
visiting these electorates and outlining her vision to restore
fairness, security and safety to workers", Ms Giles says.
