SA UNIONS
FIGHTS FOR MINIMUM WAGE RISE
4 June 2006
The South Australian Industrial
Relations Commission will hear an application for a minimum wage
rise for South Australian workers on Monday 5 June at 10.00 am.
The application is being brought by
South Australian unions, with the support of the state government.
The increase would apply to about
20,000 minimum wage earners under South Australian awards, who work
for small businesses.
Many thousands more will not be
covered by this application because changes to federal laws mean
they must instead wait for the federal government's so-called Fair
Pay Commission.
SA Unions will resist federal
government attempts to have the application dismissed, by arguing
the SA IRC is the appropriate body to determine wage matters
specific to South Australia.
SA Unions will also argue against
Business SA's opposition to the rise, by pointing out that those on
the lowest wages are struggling to make ends meet in the face of the
spiralling cost of living. The state generally is in good
economic shape and improvement to the minimum wage is affordable and
necessary.
