IMPORTANT ELECTION FOR WORKERS RIGHTS

20 February 2006

With the state election now officially underway, voters have an important choice to make this election - will they opt for a government which will fight for workers' rights, or will they hand the job to a party which intends to slash and burn?

That's the fundamental question according to SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles.

"And to make sure people understand how significant a choice they are making, we are bringing ACTU Secretary, Greg Combet to South Australia."

"We will be taking Greg to the Spencer Gulf region, to add strength to the crucial campaign to win the ALP important country seats." (Wednesday 22 and Thursday 23 February).

"Workers in the country stand to be even more disadvantaged by draconian industrial changes, and they need a state government committed to protecting their rights," Ms Giles says.

"Premier Mike Rann understands the advantages our state industrial system has over the rest of Australia - that is part of the reason he has won big job-generating contracts like the Air Warfare Destroyer.  Mike Rann  is committed to delivering workers fairness."

"By contrast, Opposition Leader Rob Kerin is the federal government's lapdog.  He's prepared to sacrifice workers' rights and destroy this states excellent system just to get a pat on the head from Canberra."

"Mike Rann will fight for workers' rights and Rob Kerin wants to strip them.  That is a big different", Ms Giles says.

"A sound industrial system is central to South Australia's continued growth and progress.  We have the lowest rate of industrial disputation, the highest level of cooperation and best system for both employers and employees."

"The message from Greg Combet and SA Unions is clear.  Mike Rann will fight for workers' rights in order to create jobs and keep the economy moving.  Rob Kerin won't.  The choice for voters is equally clear", Ms Giles says.
