BLOOD,
SWEAT AND SOLIDARITY
UNION
LEADERS ROLL UP THEIR SLEEVES TO SUPPORT OPERATION LIFEBLOOD
23 June 2006
South Australian Union leaders will today roll up their sleeves to
donate blood, in a gesture which symbolises unions' support for the
wider community.
SA Unions Secretary Janet Giles will be the first to a donate a pint
of blood to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service (ARCBS) as part
of Operation Lifeblood.
"Unions are all about connecting with people and supporting the
community - and giving blood is a meaningful commitment to our
society, as it is a direct and immediate way of saving lives."
"Thousands of South Australians rely on blood donations to survive -
be they cancer patients, burns victims, or even our member workers
injured on the job. Our blood donation is of direct assistance
to those in physical need," Ms Giles says.
According to the ARCBS, one in three people will need blood in their
lifetime, but only one in thirty people donate blood. Union
leaders hope to set an example for their members, which may help
boost blood stocks for the benefit of the entire community.
Operation Lifeblood aims to recruit 45,000 first time donors during
May, June and July.
Janet Giles will be joined by Australian Nursing Federation
Secretary, Lee Thomas, Community and Public Sector Union Secretary,
Karen Atherton, Australian Education Union President, Andrew Gohl,
National Union of Workers Secretary, Nick Thredgold, Finance Sector
Union Secretary, Karen Brown, Independent Education Union Secretary,
Glen Seidel, Australian Workers Union Officer, Marcus Hanson, Liquor
Hospitality and Miscellaneous Workers Union Organisers, Nadia Lai
and Joy Wyatt, and United Firefighters Union Secretary, Terry Leach
to give blood at the Blood Service today.
Between them, these union officials represent about 170,000 South
Australian workers.
