WORKPLACE
DEATH
14 July 2006
SA Unions is today mourning the death
of another worker in an industrial accident in South Australia.
Early this morning a 38 year old bus
driver was killed when crushed by his vehicle while changing a tyre.
SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says
she deplores this senseless waste of life.
"Our hearts go out to the man's
family and friends, as well as to the bus passengers who endured
this tragedy."
Ms Giles says SA Unions will remain
vigilant in its campaign for safer work places.
"This is taking a huge emotional toll
on our society, and costing us socially, economically and
skills-wise."
"In the past financial year, 18
workers were killed in industrial accidents. Here we are just
two weeks into the new financial year and a life has been lost."
"In just the past 3 months since
April, 8 people have been killed."
"SA Unions will continue to work with
the state government to improve workplace safety, especially in high
risk industries such as transport, construction and manufacturing."
"This tragedy reinforces the need for
employers to adopt a stronger focus on workplace health and safety -
and for tougher penalties for those who fail to do so", Ms Giles
says.
