COMBET
KICKS OFF NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION IN ADELAIDE
26 June 2006
ACTU Secretary, Greg Combet will address a mass meeting of union
delegates at the Adelaide Town Hall today, for the national launch
of a week of action in defence of workers' rights.
SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says the week of action aims to
galvanise the determination of Australian workers to achieve fairer
laws that protect work rights.
"Our sights are firmly set on the upcoming federal election.
In a little over 12 months, we hope to see John Howard ejected from
the lodge and his draconian industrial laws scrapped."
"ACTU Secretary, Greg Combet will talk to workers about the campaign
ahead, and how each of them can play a part in creating a fair,
decent Australia."
"South Australia will play an important part. We have three
crucial marginal seats - Kingston, Makin and Wakefield where the
defeat of the sitting liberal MP's will be pivotal in ousting the
Howard government. On Wednesday workers will focus on those
seats as part of Australia wide rallies as they key to getting rid
of these brutal IR laws."
"The new laws are hurting Australian workers. The federal
government broke its promise that workers wouldn't be worse off.
People are being pushed onto individual contracts that strip their
rights, are forced to accept lower pay and conditions, and are
sacked without warning or recourse," Ms Giles says.
"The federal government's own research shows 64% of individual
contracts erase annual leave loading and 63% remove penalty rates.
Workers are struggling to keep their heads above water as the new
laws kick in. Lower pay makes it harder for families to afford
rising living costs and higher petrol prices."
"Members from every union across the state will attend, and pledge
to get rid of these unfair laws by getting rid of this unfair
government," Ms Giles says.
