BEAZLEY'S
PLEDGE TO SCRAP AWA'S GOOD NEWS FOR YOUTH
13 June 2006
SA Unions has
welcomed Labor leader Kim Beazley's promise to scrap Australian
Workplace Agreements and get rid of the federal government's
draconian industrial laws.
SA Unions
Secretary, Janet Giles says the pledge is one that puts Australia's
social and economic interests at the forefront.
"This is
especially important for young workers, who are the most exploited
of employees. AWA's are offered to teenagers on a 'take it or
leave it' basis. Young people are treated as dirt cheap and
disposable under the federal laws."
"Scrapping AWA's
and giving young people the protection of awards which protect their
rights is vital for Australia's future."
"Increased job
certainty and fair income makes economic sense. Cutting wages
and entitlements only intensifies reliance on welfare, reduces
personal spending and hence retards the economy."
"It is also
socially responsible to ensure young workers are treated fairly, get
a decent living wage, and become productive members of our
workforce. Decent working conditions are an investment in our
future".
"SA Unions
welcomes federal Labor's announcement during youth week, because Kim
Beazley's pledge, while important for all workers, is especially
important for the young", Ms Giles says.
