BACK TO
WORK WITH A COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT - RADIO RENTALS WORKERS BEAT
INDIVIDUAL CONTRACTS
11 October 2006
After the most torrid dispute seen in
Adelaide for many years, Radio Rentals workers went back to work
last Friday and have now negotiated an agreement with their key
demands for a collective agreement and reasonable conditions met.
"They have beaten the employer lock
out tactic which was designed to push them onto individual contracts
with inferior pay and conditions", SA Unions Secretary Janet Giles
says.
"We are also pleased that the company
has agreed to pay the workers who were made redundant an enhanced
package which allows them to get on with their lives."
"The massive public support received
by the workers during the dispute just goes to show that there is
little public support for the federal government's work laws", she
says.
"The right for workers to choose to
have a collective agreement is a fundamental right that has been
taken away by these new workplace laws".
Union and community members donated
significant funds in order to sustain these workers while they were
locked out by the employer.
"We know they are extremely grateful
for this practical support and it demonstrated the on-going
commitment of the union movement to stand by all workers who are
attacked by the new federal laws", Ms Giles says.
Union members right across the state
send their congratulations to the radio rental workers and their
families, and will soon join them in a celebration.
"We now urge people to go back to
shop at Radio Rentals stores. Everyone who works there wants
to now get on with their jobs and provide continued excellent
customer service", Ms Giles says.
