ADELAIDE
GEARS UP FOR NATIONAL DAY OF COMMUNITY PROTEST
27 November
2006
Tens of thousands of people are
expected to descend upon Elder Park, and hundreds others in country
venues around the state for this Thursday's national day of
community protest against the Howard government's unfair industrial
laws.
SA Unions Secretary, Janet Giles says
South Australia will be part of what will be Australia's biggest
ever simultaneous community protest, with a satellite broadcast
linking more than 300 sites with the main rally at the Melbourne
Cricket Ground.
"This rally represents the next stage
in the community campaign to change these laws, by changing the
government", Ms Giles says.
"We have about 12 months until the
next federal election to achieve that goal, and are focusing
especially strongly on the three key marginal seats of Kingston,
Makin and Wakefield. If we can win changes there, we can
probably change the government", Ms Giles says.
Thursday's protest will highlight the
impact of the new laws on workers, from unfair dismissals to pay
cuts and stripping of working conditions.
"In order to change these unfair laws
and give workers decent work rights and fair pay, we need to build
community understanding that every vote is vital. We are
hoping for a strong turnout on Thursday to send a clear message to
the federal government that people are strongly opposed to its
unfair laws."
"This is about being positive and
recognising that individuals united together can make a difference.
We hope to reinforce that sense of unity on Thursday. It will
be a real community event, and we are urging people to bring their
kids, as it is their futures at stake."
"Rod Quantock will MC the Adelaide
event, and there will be plenty for families to see and do with
bands and entertainers complementing a performance live from the MCG
of the "working class man" himself, Jimmy Barnes."
Other South Australian rally
locations are Bordertown, Millicent, Mount Gambier, Murray Bridge,
Naracoorte, Port Pirie, Berri, Roxby Downs, Whyalla, Port Augusta,
Port Lincoln, Cleve, Kingscote, Leigh Creek, Ceduna, Kadina and
Victor Harbor.
