WORKERS’
RIGHTS TO DOMINATE CITY SKYLINE
21
October 2005
A massive banner
urging workers to stand up against John Howard’s attack on their
work rights will dominate the Adelaide city skyline from tomorrow.
The banner,
measuring 10 metres by 2 metres carries the catchcry “Your rights at
work – worth fighting for”.
Underneath will
be another big banner, measuring 5 metres by 1.2 metres, giving
details of the workers’ day of action on November 15.
The giant
banners in the campaign colours of orange, black and white will be
unfurled from the Australian Central Credit Union construction site
in Light Square by CFMEU members tomorrow morning, Saturday October
22, at 10.30am.
The banners, to
be unfurled from scaffolding 8 storeys high, will be visible from
the lower parts of North Adelaide, and by motorists coming into the
city on the Morphett Street Bridge.
They’ll be moved
around prominent city building sites in the lead up to the rally.
Saturday also
marks the beginning of a public information blitz, with workers
handing out leaflets urging people to attend the rally and oppose
moves to strip back their hard earned rights like overtime pay,
public holidays and shift loadings.
SA Unions
Secretary Janet Giles says on November 15 some 15,000 to 20,000
people are expected to gather in Elder Park for a national Sky TV
link up, followed by a rally to Parliament House. Link ups will also
be held in 13 country centres across the state.
